AKM Mosharraf, ANH Akhter freed on bail

Former BNP state minister for energy and mineral resources AKM Mosharraf Hossain and former power secretary ANH Akhter Hossain were released on bail yesterday from jail.

Mosharraf was released from Dhaka Central Jail at about 5:00pm while Akhter from the prison cell of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University at about 4:00pm, Inspector General of Prisons (IG-Prisons) Brig Gen Zakir Hassan said while talking to The Daily Star. বিস্তারিত »

Mujahid denied bail, asked to surrender to trial court

The High Court again denied bail to wanted Jamaat secretary general and ex-Minister Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujaheed in Barapukuria coalmine corruption case yesterday and ordered him to surrender to the trial court within two weeks.

However, the HC asked the police “not to arrest or harass” him within this intervening period.

The court orders came as Mujaheed, carrying warrant of arrest over his head for the last 13 days surrendered to the HC bench of Justice M Anwarul Haque and Justice Farah Mahbub. Earlier on June 3, another High Court bench denied him bail. Mujaheed then moved to the Supreme Court for redress, but the chamber judge dismissed his bail prayer on October 8 as being “not pressed” by his lawyer. বিস্তারিত »

NIKO graft case: HC defers hearing to October 29

The High Court Sunday granted bail for three months to detained Awami League presidium member and former state minister Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir in a tax evasion case.

A division bench comprising Justice ABM Khairul Haque and Justice MA Hye passed the order upon a petition challenging the validity of the tax evasion case against Alamgir.

The Court also stayed for three weeks the case proceedings and issued a rule upon the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to explain in six weeks why the case should not be declared illegal. বিস্তারিত »

Interpol had detected the deposit of over Tk 14.15 crore by former foreign minister M Morshed Khan and his son Faisal Morshed Khan. The High Court Division of the Supreme Court Thursday stayed the proceedings of the Barapukuria coalmine graft case aganst former Prime Minister BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for three months. Meanwhile, the former Premier appeared before the crowded Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka yesterday in the case while Judge Md Azizul Haque sent the case to the Special Court No.2 of presiding Judge A K Roy, set up at the Parliament Complex for quick trial.

Formers Ministers M Shamsul Islam, M K Anwar and Mowlana Matiur Rahman Nizami, also the Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, appeared before the court Meanwhile, former Minister Altaf Hossain Chowdhury was produced before the court through an ambulance from the prison cell of BSMMU hospital. HC extends Jalil’s bail by another six months

The High Court yesterday extended by another six months the bail for Awami League General Secretary M Abdul Jalil in a case involving charges of earning wealth illegally.

It passed the order following a petition by Jalil’s counsel barrister Shafique Ahmed.

Govt withdraws appeals against Hasina’s case stay

The Supreme Court yesterday disposed of a pending Anti-Corruption Commission petition for vacating High Court orders extending stay on the trial proceedings of Niko and Barge-mounted power-plant graft cases against ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

A regular bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice MM Ruhul Amin passed the order as Attorney General (AG) Salah Uddin Ahmed, the counsel for the ACC, moved a new petition intending not to press the vacation petition.

The AG moved the petition as the High Court Tuesday set October 19 for analogous hearing of rules on quashing petitions filed against the Niko and Barge-mounted power-plant graft cases by the former Prime Minister and Awami League chief, Sheikh Hasina, now abroad on parole for treatment of her eyes and ears. বিস্তারিত »

100 graft convicts named: 41 belong to BNP, 25 to AL : All disqualified for polls

Over one hundred persons convicted in different corruption and criminal cases under the state of emergency would not be able to contest the forthcoming general elections scheduled for December 18, sources in the Anti-Corruption Commission said.

According to the sources, most of the convicted persons include former ministers, MPs, political leaders, their family members, businessmen, bureaucrats and trade union leaders.

Informed sources said 98 people were convicted in different cases filed by ACC till August 10. Of them, 41 were from the BNP while 25 from the Awami League. বিস্তারিত »

A Dhaka court yesterday ordered to attach properties of Mahbuba Sultana, wife of detained former BNP lawmaker Mosaddak Ali Falu, in connection with a tax evasion case filed by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
