HC grants 3-month bail to Tuku

The High Court Wednesday granted bail for three months to jailed former state minister for power Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku, doubly convicted in a graft case, reports UNB.

A division bench, comprising Justice M Mozammel Hossain and Justice Afzal Hossain Ahmed, granted him interim bail on health grounds, court sources said.

On November 15 last year, a special court trying high-profile corruption suspects sentenced the detained Tuku for a total of nine years in a two-pronged graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). বিস্তারিত »

Niko, barge-mounted plant cases HC defers hearing in Hasina’’s petitions

The High Court Wednesday again held back for 25 days the hearing on its rules on the quashing petitions filed against Niko and Barge-mounted power-plant graft cases by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, now abroad on parole for treatment, reports UNB.

SC upholds HC stay on Barapukuria case against Khaleda

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court Wednesday upheld the High Court order of stay halting the proceedings of the Barapukuria coalmine graft case against ex-Prime Minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia till mid-January, reports UNB.

Anti-Corruption Commission plea for vacating the stay to let the state side go on with the prosecution of the immediate-past premier was dismissed by the apex court.

A 5-judge regular bench of the AD, headed by Chief Justice MM Ruhul Amin, passed the order after a full-length hearing on the plea of the anti-corruption watchdog that herded up two former premiers, many ministers and MPs, business tycoons and bureaucrats into jail under a clean-up drive in the current interim period. বিস্তারিত »

A Dhaka court on Wednesday framed charges against 22 people, including former deputy minister of BNP Abdus Salam Pintu and Harkatul Jihad (HUJI) kingpin Mufti Abdul Hannan, in the grenade attacks on Awami League rally at Bangabandhu Avenue on August 21 in 2004.

The attacks left at least 26 people, including Mohila Awami League president Ivy Rahman, killed and score others injured. Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina narrowly escaped the attacks.

Judge Masdar Hossain of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 read out the charges in presence of 14 accused. He set November 5 for beginning of trial through testimony of the witnesses. বিস্তারিত »

Tax-dodging case Charge framed against Ctg mayor

CHITTAGONG, Oct 28: Mayor of Chittagong ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, released on bail from jail a few days back, was Tuesday indicted for tax evasion, reports UNB.

Judge SM Soliman of the divisional Special Judge Court framed the charge and fixed November 5 for recording depositions by prosecution witnesses.

Earlier on October 23, the court rejected a petition of Mohiuddin’’s counsel for discharging him from the case.

Additional Commissioner of Taxes of Chittagong Ziaul Haque filed the case against the Chittagong City Corporation Mayor on September 9 this year on charge of evading the payment of about Tk 27.58 lakh income tax. বিস্তারিত »

Former BNP MP Moni sent to prison

BARGUNA, Oct 28: Former MP Nurul Islam Moni and his brother convicted 14 years rigorous imprisonment in absentia were sent to prison when surrendered to the court Tuesday, reports UNB.

An Anti-Corruption Commission application for staying operation of the High Court orders halting proceedings of the Barapukuria coalmine graft case against former Prime Minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will be heard today (Wednesday) by the Appellate Division, reports UNB.

Former energy adviser Mahmudur Rahman would request the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to investigate into money laundering accusation raised by him against its chairman Lt. Gen. (rtd) Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury.

Mahmudur Rahman went to the Motijheel Police Station on Saturday to lodge money-laundering case against the ACC chairman but the police refused to record the case.

The former energy adviser alleged that while Gen. Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury was the chairman of the Trust Bank Ltd., an amount of Tk 22.50 crore was misappropriated and the bank’’s auditor observed that the money was sent abroad. বিস্তারিত »

Bail for Babar SC upholds HC order

The Supreme Court Thursday upheld the High Court order that had granted six months” bail to detained ex-state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar in an arms case, in which he was sentenced to 17 years imprisonment by the trial court, reports UNB.

A regular Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice MM Ruhul Amin passed the order, dismissing a leave-to-appeal filed by the government against the High Court order.
